Sharing internet securely on leopard

Posted by: Mo J. Al-Mughrabi Add comments

Since I phased out completely to EGO device I've been taking it every where I go. There is times when you need to share the internet with a friend at a coffee shop or at home for my dad. Well, when you are outside at a coffee shop its a great risk to keep your WiFi open for public. so, today we found out a way to secure the network with password authentication.

First you do the steps mentioned here to enable sharing from your EGO/Mobile/Lan through WiFi. Then, you go to Network from System preferences and click on Airport.

As showing in the above figure click on the drop down menu and choose create network. A new screen will pop up asking you the name of your Computer, Channel and password if required. Leave everything as default if you wish and tick on require password then choose "128-bit WEP" and write long password something like "fiction12345%" would work.

Once you save the settings, immediately the network icon on your menu bar will change to something like this

Post your questions if you have any difficulties or comments if you have any or if you don't (wink).

Thanks for sharing :D … actually I use when I go to my friends apartment he hasn’t a wireless router.. so I plug the Ethernet to my macbook pro then I start sharing the connection through the airport

Jassim, well now you can secure your connection. Its very helpful sometime specially if you hang out with friends and like to keep your laptop handy.

I really like that feature of the Mac. It is one of the best features so far. I also used to go to Garoh it sure has been a while! Thanks for the tips.

N., yeah I was at Garooh yesterday and if you been there you must know how many laptop users are there. At every table you must see at least one or two laptops!.. It was funny, because we i started the network before securing and after only couple of minutes I found out half the coffee shops are logged in through my laptop!!!

Is there a way to the Macbook’s own Airport Card wifi sharing Permanent?

I did the instructions above. It works. BUT…

the settings dissapear whenever I turn airport off. Is there a way to make it more permanent? I have nintendo ds lite and its a bummer trying to configure “Computer-to-Computer” everytime I want to play online.
